Visit Afghanistan is an independent, non-commercial reference site. We keep tracking to a minimum and load nothing that identifies you until you have agreed to it. This page explains what cookies are, which ones this site uses, and how to change your mind at any time.

The basics

What cookies are

Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. Some are essential for a site to work; others are optional and used to measure how a site is used. Similar technologies — local storage, tags, and pixels — work in comparable ways, and where we say “cookies” below we mean all of them.

What we use

The cookies on this site

Strictly necessary

One small item of local storage remembers your cookie choice so we don’t ask again on every page. It holds a single value — whether you accepted or declined — and nothing else. This cannot be switched off, because without it the site couldn’t honour your decision.

va-consentRemembers whether you accepted analytics. Stored in your browser’s local storage; never sent to us.

Analytics — optional, off by default

If you accept, we load Google Analytics 4 through Google Tag Manager to understand which pages are read, how people arrive, and where the site could be clearer. This is aggregate and statistical — we don’t use it to identify you personally, and we don’t run advertising cookies. These load only after you click Accept. Until then they do not run at all.

_gaGoogle Analytics — distinguishes one browser from another. Expires after two years.
_ga_<id>Google Analytics — keeps session state. Expires after two years.

Google processes this data as a provider on our behalf. See Google’s Privacy Policy for how they handle it.

Your control

Changing your choice

You decide. When you first arrive, analytics are switched off — nothing loads until you choose. If you accepted and want to withdraw, or declined and want to allow it, you can:
